From Tragedy to Triumph
Ussery’s journey began during one of the most difficult periods of her life. After the sudden death of her husband, she was left to care for her two children while also trying to rebuild their lives.

Facing serious financial challenges, Ussery began searching for affordable housing options. At first, she considered buying a mobile trailer.
It seemed like a practical solution—relatively inexpensive and easy to place on her land. But after looking into it further, she realized that most trailers were simply too small for her family’s needs.
She wanted something that could provide enough space for her children while still remaining within her limited budget.
Then an unexpected idea changed everything. Her brother-in-law, Bob—an air traffic controller—suggested something completely unusual: living inside an airplane.
At first, the concept sounded almost unbelievable. But curiosity quickly turned into excitement.
When Ussery visited a dismantled Boeing 727 that was being sold for scrap, she was immediately intrigued.
The massive aircraft had enormous potential. With its long fuselage and spacious interior, it could easily be transformed into a surprisingly large living area.
Even more surprising was the price: the plane cost only about $2,000, including transportation to her property.
Inspired by the idea—and perhaps amused by the fact that businessman Donald Trump owned a private Boeing 727 at the time—Ussery jokingly named her aircraft “Little Trump.”
Turning a Jet Into a Home
With determination and creativity, Ussery began the enormous task of transforming the retired aircraft into a livable home.
She invested less than $30,000 in the project—an amount that would equal roughly double that today. Despite the modest budget, she managed to accomplish something truly remarkable.
First, the aircraft had to be securely positioned on her property. She carefully placed it so the nose of the plane faced a nearby lake, allowing future windows to overlook the peaceful scenery.
To ensure stability, the tail of the aircraft was anchored firmly in concrete so it would remain secure during storms and weather changes.
Once the plane was in place, the real work began. The interior of the aircraft offered approximately 1,500 square feet of living space—comparable to a modest family home. With 76 windows along the nearly 138-foot-long fuselage, natural light flooded the space, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
Ussery removed much of the original aircraft interior and began redesigning the space room by room. She added insulation to regulate temperature and installed new flooring throughout the aircraft.
While the airplane windows could not be opened, the air-conditioning system helped keep the interior comfortable even during hot Mississippi summers.
She also found clever ways to make use of the aircraft’s existing features.
Overhead luggage compartments were converted into practical storage areas, while the original bathrooms were redesigned to fit residential needs.
Every part of the aircraft was carefully adapted to maximize space and functionality.
A Unique Oasis of Comfort
After years of hard work, the aircraft was transformed into a truly remarkable home. Inside the plane were three bedrooms, a cozy living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and even a laundry area.
Despite its unusual structure, the home offered everything a family would need for everyday life.
But Ussery didn’t stop at the basics. She added several modern comforts, including a working telephone and a full oven for cooking meals.
The most impressive transformation, however, was the airplane’s cockpit.
Rather than leaving it unused, Ussery converted the cockpit into a luxurious master bathroom. She installed a large soaking tub positioned perfectly to overlook the lake outside.
The view from the front of the plane created a magical illusion—anyone sitting in the tub felt as if they were floating above the water.
The design combined creativity and practicality, turning what was once a pilot’s control center into one of the most relaxing spaces in the house.
Living the Dream
Perhaps the most astonishing part of this story is that Ussery completed most of the project herself.
With determination and a vision for the future, she transformed an abandoned aircraft into a beautiful home where she and her children lived happily from 1995 to 1999.

Sadly, while the plane was being moved a short distance for this purpose, an accident occurred. The aircraft slipped from its transport carriage and broke apart, ending the life of the remarkable structure.
