In 1981, the world was captivated by Princess Diana and her fairytale romance with Prince Charles. She was the public’s darling—a beautiful, shy young woman who had captured the heart of the Prince of Wales.
But behind the scenes, things were not as perfect as they seemed. 1981 was a monumental year for Princess Diana, one that would change her life forever.
While working as a nursery school assistant, she became engaged to Prince Charles, heir to the British throne.
Their royal wedding in July that year was a global spectacle, watched by millions, as Diana became the Princess of Wales.
Yet beneath the glamour and fairytale image, there were darker struggles hidden from view.
At first, however, everything appeared calm and perfect between the newly in-love couple. When Charles left for a five-week royal tour in 1981, cameras captured Diana in tears as she said goodbye.
At the time, people believed she was simply heartbroken over being separated from her future husband. But the real reason for her tears was far more devastating.
The real reason behind Diana’s tears at the airport
One of the most memorable and heartbreaking moments of 1981 took place on March 29, when Lady Diana tearfully said goodbye to Prince Charles at Heathrow Airport.
The Prince was about to depart on a five-week tour of the United States, Venezuela, New Zealand, and Australia.
Dressed in a red coat, fawn-colored skirt, and brown leather shoes, Diana walked alongside him through puddles on the runway after arriving in the Queen’s Rolls-Royce.
Just days earlier, Queen Elizabeth II had formally given her consent for Prince Charles to marry Lady Diana Spencer, marking the beginning of their fairytale engagement.
As the RAF VC10 aircraft prepared for takeoff, Diana stayed behind to see Charles off. He kissed her on both cheeks on the windy, rain-swept tarmac.
This emotional scene became one of the defining images of Diana’s early public life—it was their first public kiss since the engagement announcement, and it was widely described as a tender farewell.
Reports at the time confirmed that Diana was crying as they parted.
“The Prince tried to cheer her up, kissed her on both cheeks, and with a broad smile patted her cheek and said, ‘Take care,’” reported the Western Daily Press in 1981.
Airport staff even remarked that they had “never seen such a moving farewell.” But decades later, it became clear that the truth was far more complex—and far more painful.
Diana’s own words
In the 2017 documentary Diana: In Her Own Words, the world finally heard Diana’s side of the story.
In recordings she made for biographer Andrew Morton in 1991, she revealed that her tears had nothing to do with Charles leaving.
“Perhaps you remember seeing a picture of me sobbing in a red coat when he left on his plane,” Diana said. “That had nothing to do with him going. The most awful thing had happened before he left.”
At just 19 years old, Diana was still very young and inexperienced. But she had discovered something that would change everything—Charles’s relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles.
“I was in his office talking to him about his trip,” Diana recalled. “The phone rang—it was Camilla. Just before he was going away for five weeks.
So I thought, ‘Shall I be nice or just sit here?’ So I thought I’d be nice and left them to it. And that broke my heart.”
The bracelet that confirmed her fears
While Charles was away, Diana learned something even more painful—he had bought a bracelet for Camilla.
“I went into a man’s office one day and said, ‘What’s in that parcel?’ And he said, ‘Oh, you shouldn’t look at that.’ So I opened it—and there was the bracelet.”
“I was devastated,” she said. “I thought, ‘Well, he’s going to give it to her tonight.’ Anger, anger, anger… ‘Why can’t you be honest with me?’ But he completely shut me out.”
Despite the heartbreak, Diana tried to stay strong. But even seemingly casual encounters carried deeper meaning. During a lunch with Camilla, Diana sensed the unspoken tension.
“‘You’re not going hunting, are you?’ Camilla asked,” Diana recalled. “I said no. She said, ‘I just wanted to know,’ and I thought—that was her way of communicating.”
Tears of anger, not sadness
Royal biographer Tina Brown later suggested that Diana’s tears at the airport were not from sadness, but from anger.
“The tears were not of sorrow but of rage,” Brown wrote in The Diana Chronicles. Diana had just discovered that the man she was about to marry had given a deeply personal gift to another woman—a sign of what was to come.
Diana later described her relationship with Charles as emotionally unstable: “He was hot and cold—you never knew what mood he’d be in.”
Shortly before the wedding, Diana even confided in her sisters, saying, “I can’t marry him. I can’t do this.” But they reminded her of the reality—her face was already everywhere, and there was no turning back.
The wedding went ahead despite the turmoil in Diana’s heart.
What happened next
Years later, after a marriage marked by infidelity and emotional strain, Charles and Diana divorced in 1996. Diana famously said, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
In 1989, Diana even confronted Camilla directly, telling her, “I know what’s going on between you and Charles. Don’t treat me like an idiot.”
Tragically, Princess Diana died in a car accident on August 31, 1997.
