Behind the scenes of the relationship between Diana and Michael Jackson
There is a striking image of Princess Diana and Michael Jackson that has always stayed with me.
At first glance, it looks like just a shared moment between two legends. But if you take a closer look, you begin to realize that their story is much more than that.

Neither Princess Diana nor Michael Jackson needs much introduction—their iconic status speaks for itself.
While it wasn’t unimaginable that these two figures would meet, few could have guessed that their encounter would lead to something beyond a simple exchange.
Interestingly, they only met in person once.
Diana, affectionately known as “the People’s Princess,” was a huge music fan. Her favorite band was Duran Duran, and she especially loved their music during the 1980s.
However, her record collection also included albums by Michael Jackson—she was said to play Thriller and Bad repeatedly.
It was Jackson’s music that ultimately brought them together on July 16, 1988.
On that day, Diana and her then-husband, Prince Charles, attended Michael Jackson’s Bad tour concert at Wembley Stadium. It would be their first—and only—face-to-face meeting.
“He told me it was an honor to meet me,” Jackson later said in a 1997 interview.
Michael admitted he was extremely nervous before shaking Diana’s hand, a tension that can almost be felt in the photographs from that day.
Their first meeting was slightly awkward and tentative—partly because of a decision he had made beforehand.
Out of respect, Jackson had removed the song “Dirty Diana” from the concert setlist, worried it might offend her due to its subject matter about a rock groupie.
“I took it out of the show in honor of Her Royal Highness,” he explained.
But Diana’s reaction surprised him.
Before the concert, she asked if he planned to perform the song.
When he told her he had removed it because of her presence, she insisted that he include it—and even encouraged him to perform it. In the end, he did.
Michael Jackson admired Diana deeply and spoke of her with great respect.
“I thought the princess was wonderful,” he said.
Knowing how much she loved her children, he also gifted miniature tour jackets to her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
It’s said that during the concert, Diana danced enthusiastically, while Prince Charles remained seated.
What few could have predicted was that this brief meeting would spark a deeper connection.
“We were very close,” Jackson later claimed in a 1999 interview. “We were very close on the phone…
She would usually call me late at night—often after three in the morning—and we would talk for hours. She mostly spoke about her children and the press.”
He even suggested that these calls caused tension in his marriage to Lisa Marie Presley, claiming she sometimes listened in.
However, these late-night conversations have never been fully confirmed. According to some of Diana’s close friends, Jackson did not have her private number, and palace staff were instructed not to connect such calls.
What is certain, though, is that they shared similar experiences—and similar struggles.
Both Diana and Michael Jackson were deeply committed to charitable causes.
At the time they met, Jackson had donated significant sums to organizations like the Prince’s Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
They also shared a taste for jewelry, both being clients of the fashion house Butler & Wilson.
More than that, they shared something deeply personal: life under constant public scrutiny.
Both were among the most photographed individuals in the world. Diana’s every move attracted media attention, while Jackson’s life and appearance made him a relentless target for tabloids.

When he returned to the stage days later, he paid tribute to her, saying:
“In my heart, I was saying, ‘I love you, Diana. Shine. And shine forever, because you are the true Princess of the People.’”
Although he did not attend her funeral, he participated in a memorial service in Los Angeles, honoring her memory.
Dressed in black, he told reporters, “I want to be here to honor my friend… I love her.”
In later years, Jackson continued to speak fondly of Diana, calling her “one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known” and emphasizing the bond they shared through their experiences with the media.
