Does unplugging appliances save electricity?

Does unplugging appliances save electricity? I don't think so, but my husband unplugs almost everything after using it, saying it saves a lot of electricity. I'd love everyone's opinions on this.

Many people assume that once a device is turned off, it stops using power entirely. However, this is not always true.

This is often referred to as “standby power” or “phantom load,” and it is the main reason your husband believes unplugging devices can reduce energy consumption.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at how electrical devices are designed today.

Many appliances, especially those with digital displays, remote controls, or internal clocks, are never truly “off” unless they are physically disconnected from the power source.

Televisions, microwaves, coffee machines, gaming consoles, phone chargers, and even some washing machines often remain in a low-power state.

This allows them to respond quickly when you turn them on, keep settings saved, or display information like the time.

While the amount of electricity used in this standby mode is small for each device, it can add up over time, especially in households with many electronics.

For example, a television in standby mode might use anywhere from 1 to 5 watts of power continuously.

A gaming console or a computer setup can use significantly more, sometimes 10 watts or higher depending on the model.

Phone chargers left plugged in without a phone still draw a tiny amount of electricity as well. Individually, these numbers seem insignificant.

However, when you consider that these devices are plugged in 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the total consumption becomes more noticeable.

Over a full year, standby power can account for approximately 5 to 10 percent of a household’s electricity usage in some cases.

That being said, your skepticism is not entirely wrong. The amount of money saved by unplugging everything is often smaller than people expect.

For many low-power devices, the cost difference might only be a few dollars per year.

Unplugging a phone charger or a simple appliance may not produce a dramatic reduction in your electricity bill.

This is why some people feel that unplugging everything is unnecessary or inconvenient compared to the relatively small savings.

However, your husband’s habit becomes more reasonable when you consider certain types of appliances.

Devices that generate heat or maintain readiness, such as coffee makers, electric kettles with digital displays, or older televisions, can consume more standby power than newer, energy-efficient models.

Similarly, entertainment systems with multiple components—such as a TV, sound system, streaming box, and gaming console—can collectively draw a noticeable amount of electricity even when not actively in use.

In these cases, unplugging or switching them off at a power strip can make a more meaningful difference.

Another factor to consider is the age and efficiency of the appliances.

Newer devices are often designed to meet stricter energy standards and tend to use less standby power.

Older appliances, on the other hand, may consume significantly more electricity even when idle.

If your household includes older electronics, unplugging them could result in greater savings than you might expect.

There is also a safety aspect that is sometimes overlooked.

Unplugging appliances can reduce the risk of electrical faults, overheating, or fire hazards, particularly with older wiring or lower-quality devices. While this is not directly related to energy savings, it is another reason why some people prefer to unplug devices when they are not in use.
