Al Born, the coroner for Teller County, conducted an autopsy. Surprisingly, there were no signs of trauma.
No broken bones, no knife wounds, no bullet injuries, and no evidence of drugs were found in his system.
At first, Born concluded that the death was accidental.
His theory suggested that Josh may have climbed down into the chimney from the roof, possibly seeking shelter or exploring the abandoned cabin.
According to that explanation, he became trapped in the narrow space and eventually died from hypothermia as nighttime temperatures dropped into the 20-degree range.
However, not everyone believed this explanation made sense.
The cabin’s owner, Chuck Murphy, insisted that it would have been nearly impossible for someone to enter the chimney that way.
He explained that about twenty years earlier he had installed a strong steel mesh cap at the top of the chimney to prevent animals from entering.
“There’s no way he could have crawled down there with that mesh in place,” Murphy said.
Murphy also described the cabin as damp, filthy, and rarely visited. Raccoon droppings and other signs of animal activity were scattered throughout the building.
While he occasionally stopped by to check on the property over the years, he never suspected a body was hidden inside the chimney.
The unpleasant smell he sometimes noticed was assumed to come from dead animals inside the walls.
Because of these inconsistencies, the case was eventually reopened.

“This case really challenged our thinking,” Born admitted in interviews. “We still can’t fully explain why he removed his clothes, left them folded inside, climbed onto the roof, and then went down the chimney.”
During the investigation, police also received information from individuals who claimed someone had once bragged about putting Josh “in a hole.”
One man who had reportedly been seen with Josh before he disappeared was later arrested in connection with an unrelated fatal stabbing.
Despite these leads, investigators were unable to confirm any direct connection between that individual and Josh’s death.
