Gary and Angela Williams, a couple from the quiet town of Overton in Lancashire, England, never imagined that a simple walk along the beach would turn into an extraordinary discovery.

Although it may not look appealing at first, ambergris is considered one of the most valuable materials used in the perfume industry.

According to Discover magazine, ambergris forms inside the digestive system of sperm whales and has been prized for centuries because of its ability to stabilize fragrances and enhance their longevity.

The way ambergris forms is quite fascinating. Sperm whales often feed on squid, and squid have hard, sharp beaks that can be difficult to digest.

To protect their intestines from being injured by these sharp pieces, the whale’s body produces a waxy, protective substance. Over time, this material builds up around the indigestible debris, gradually forming a solid mass. As more material accumulates, the lump grows larger and larger.
